Creating our Logo: Thoughts On Design
4 02 2007Hey gamers… well tonight I started thinking about a logo for 2g4g.com. While this still needs some review I’d thought you’d like to see how far we’ve come in only a few days.
My main objective in designing a logo for 2g4g is simple… clean, simple and direct. So initially last week when I was trying to figure out the logo, I figure I’d start of with emphasising the 2g4g in 2gamers4gamers by bringing forward the letters by increasing the font.
Knowing that we eventually wanted print business cards, I made sure we would set up a simple 2-tone color for the name. Red/White was my first theme.
Yet after I talked to Junj last Thurs., he pointed out that the red white color scheme was already taken by both Gamestop and EBGames. Naturally being the newbies in town in the gaming world we figured we’d represent the opposite of what is already established so a blue color became the obvious alternate to try.

Last weeks Red/White theme.

Trying to brainstorm, I applied the light blue color and was satisfied with the “look”, I started working on designing the actual visual logo for us. Like any brainstorming, it was a bit difficult to come up with something that had meaning and still looked cool.
After a few days of researching I found it was kinda hard to represent gaming in an image. I mean first thing that comes to mind of course would be a controller. But with the recent advent of the Wii, it seems that a basic “Ps2″ and “Xbox”-like controller wouldn’t really represent the era in gaming we are in.Then I thought about showcasing maybe a wire plugg’n in to a box, but then of course we now have wireless connectivity so that even that is now obsolete to the current trends in gaming.
So in designing a current gaming logo what images really represent gaming? And what kind of images would fit the 2gamers 4 gamers definition?
Well after thinking and playing around with different concepts, I started thinking of which images currently are being used to advertise games that catch my eye. After awhile I started thinking about the Nintendo Wii commercial.
At the end of their commercial you see the last i bow as the car in the last image “rides off into the sunset.” (Great ad by the way Nintendo)

Now while I don’t aim to immediately take from that, I did like the fact that the two ii represent a person, and or identity… something I took a liking to and could be a visual representation of 2 gamers just starting a gaming blog & rental biz and also juxtipated to represent TO gamers… (im sure many of you are reading this and are saying “duh”)

Fig. 5. Think gamepad?
Not wanting to totally rip the idea though, I went against thinking of the 4g to represent 4iiii’s in one row…. plus the redundancy factor set in real fast.
But what if I was to “play with how that was represented” I thought. After changing up the font sizes, and playing with the rotation, I found I liked the stairway to the large G (gamers) font.
Yet, after awhile, I also tried inserting a paranthesis on the G font to represent an emphasis on “gamers”…. however later I found it looking more like a towering award. (see Fig 4) and decided against that.
Instead you’ll find I went with the tried and often all encompasing circle to surround the font. I figured it would create a that sense of “inclusiveness” that we wanted gamers to feel… both for the logo and the core meaning of our company.
So although its still has to be voted on, I’m betting this might be close. *Update* Still work’n on it.

Fig. 6. Pre-Final. What do you think?
But who knows? We might just cross this out and go back to the drawing board. *Update* Yeah we’re still at it.
How about you… do you Like it? Hate it? Have a better idea?
If you do have any ideas for us here at 2g4g let us know here on the blog.
Til then, stay sober.
