Playstation Franchise Moves Forward As Its Inventor Retires

28 04 2007

On Thursday April 26, Playstation’s creator, Ken Kutaragi announced his plan to retire from the gaming industry, specifically, from his role as chief excutive at Sony Computer Entertainment.

And while it appears that Sony is saying Kutaragi’s departure is not due to the PS3’s slow debut, his departure at a time when the Playstation brand is still coming out of a coma-like status from strong competition from both Nintendo and Microsoft, begs us to question Kutaragi’s timing.

Ken Kutaragi

Known as the “Father of the Playstation” Kutaragi was the key factor for (a then) hesitant Sony, whose decision to enter the console market followed after Kutaragi’s work on the SNES sound chip, a project that would have had Sony developing a major product add-on for the SNES system.

Which after that deal fell through, began Sony’s entry know now as Sony’s Playstation 1 console, leading us into what became the PS2, PSP and the current Playstation 3 brand.

And yet Kutaragi is not leaving his position without controversy. Despite his success, his recent odd comments and views such as stating the PS3 is “not a game machine” plus with the PS3 not gaining the immediate success and momentum that the PS2 felt, has left some wondering if Kutaragi’s move is less than voluntary.

Its apparent Kutargi had more plans for the brand he built. In fact, recently EEtimes shared Kutargi’s plans that involved a detailed vision for the future of the franchise.

“As a matter of course, I have the vision of Playstation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network,” Kutaragi states on EE Times and then continues to say “The design concept of the Cell processor is the network processor…”
Add this news to the fact that Sony Computer Entertainment is considering worldwide job cuts and remains a wonder how stable the once mighty Sony is today and how this will affect the Playstation brand as a whole it this and its future generations. Already 160 jobs have been laid off in Sony’s European division, and speculation is SCEA (US) is next.

Its not hard to speculate that the recent rumbling may be due to Sony’s losses on each PS3, as it loses approximately $ – 241.35 for each PS3 60GB version, and used to lose as much as $ – 306.85 for its discontinued 20GB PS3.

Compare this while Microsoft loses only $ -75 per Xbox360, and Wii is actually turning a profit per consold sold, and it remains to see if Sonys current problems might become its undoing.

Yet, this console generation is far from over. In fact, according to a recent report by Screen Digest’s Ed Barton, his forecast shows Sony positioned to have the PS3 be the market game leader in 2010.

How this all pans out remains to be seen, and PS’s Home might have to build more than hype if it is to be part of the resurgence.

Person of the Year? Shigeru got’s our vote!

26 04 2007

Shigeru

If Time’s cover were up to us, you know he’d be on it!

Shigeru Miyamoto – his name is recognized throughout the games industry as the father of Mario, & his status is legendary amongst majority of gamers. We know the industry would not be the same without Shigeru’s influences.

Now with the success of the Wii, Time magazine has finally decided to list Shigeru as a canidate for Person of the Year!

Funny, you would have thought his time would have come back during the N64 days when Mario64 brought us what many say the best foundation of 3D platforming, or even back when Nintendo first jumped on the scene and saved the gaming industry from Atari’s spiraling downfall & eventual crash of 1984.

Its not like Time hasn’t been around; their Person of the Year started in 1927!

But, guess better late then never, eh?

For a man who’s games are so influential amongst pop culture, there’s no doubt in our mind that Shigeru’s got our vote.

MK vs. SF:2 – A Fan Fight!

22 04 2007

Ever imagine dream matches between these two game series? If so, you probably agree that, wouldn’t it be cool if game companies would just lighten up and mix ‘em up once in awhile?

scorpion.jpg

Scorpion, Midway’s Mortal Kombat

One thing that’s cool about being the new game blog on the block is discovering all the rich game content on the web. In particular, there’s a goldmine of cool things on gaming, which if you haven’t been constantly surfing the net, you’ve might have missed.

ryu.jpg

Ryu, Capcom’s Street Fighter II

If so then my friend, this is your post. Out of the outer realms of the net, tonight we at 2G4G present to you a cool link to a homemade vid from Proxicide, listed on newgrounds.com. You can check out the full flash version here, (complete with a backstory that leads up to the fight) which by all means, I can encourage you to go there now.

Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion

Midway

However, if you’re short on time and interested in getting right to the fight between two of the top fighters in the MK and SF2 lineup, in this case, the video stars Ryu vs. Scorpion… then by all means, click play already on the youtube vid below! (Note: The flash version on Newgrounds.com has cleaner visuals)

Street Fighter’s Ryu

Capcom

MK vs. SF 2

Personally, I can’t believe how awesome the timing is on this video. Truly done by a gamer who loves attention to details and love for both fighting game franchises. Before 3D, these two fighting franchises were on the top of the gaming world.

Can’t say they’ve faired as well over the past few years (although MK has made a resurgence recently) with 3D fighters taking most of the fighting crowd.

Yet if anything this is a worthwhile reminder of two former giants. Again if you can, make sure to see the video in its entirety. (If anything, to understand how Ryu ends up in MK in the first place)Listing at a classic video from 2005, this homemade fanbrew definitely is one for the fanatics!

Practically the next best thing to an actual game mash up…Enjoy!

We’ve Moved to 2G4G.COM!

22 04 2007

2g4g_ver2.jpg
Visit us at 2g4g.com

If you’ve followed us via our 2g4g.wordpress.com, please note that we’ve moved!

We’re now on our very own hosted server, (anhosting.com) and now use our own copy of wordpress (wordpress.org) for our website.

This shouldn’t affect you if you’ve been actually following us. From the beginning, we purchased our domain names: 2g4g.com & 2gamers4gamers.com (these 2 sites now redirect to our hosted version) for the very purpose of moving the site to our own hosted version eventually.

And today’s the day!

Btw, in case you’re wondering, we’ve moved to mainly gain all the benefits of using wordpress.org vs. wordpress.com aka.. moving to our own host to gain more control and gain access to setting up our own ads, affiliates, etc.

We would have done it sooner, but we wanted to get a feel for the free wordpress.com site until we were ready to go it alone. In the end, while this mainly affects only our friends here on wordpress.com, via tagsurfers, etc. we wanted to make sure anyone whose found us via wordpress.com could still find us during the transition. (Plus google still hits up our wordpress.com blog, so we figured for marketing we’d make we’d still have it up until our own 2g4g.com search engine optimization is in place)

To help you find us, we’ll keep this version open, and I’ve also changed the layout to signify the change.

So visit us at 2g4g.com and keep us bookmarked. Ctrl + D!

Sincerely,

Cid, Co-Founder

Xbox360’s U Turn: Some Games Can, Some Can’t

As console gamers, whenever we get a new system, we expect our previous games to work.

Earlier this week Bunjie announced details of the new Halo 3 beta. Qualifying for the beta was established 1 of either 3 ways… these lucky gamers either got in on the original registration period or for those that won their entry via the “Rule of Three” contest, or possibly some might those that bought copies of Crackdown with their beta prize info inside.

Dying to be part of the mayhem? The best way to still catch up on the mix is to go and get a copy of Crackdown.

Bungie is promising three maps for the beta release; Valhalla, High Ground, and Snowbound. New weapons & vehicles like the all terrain Mongoose, Spiker, Spartain Laser, and the Spike grenade. Look for more information on Bungie’s Vidoc on their website.

Coolest Game (You’re Not Playing): ….. B-Boy The Video Game

6 04 2007

Its very seldom that a game doesn’t come to the US, but whenever
a game made doesn’t reach these shores, its usually for a good reason.
Sometimes more than not, that reason lies with localization for the product,
(the game doesn’t mix with US culture) or other times, the game just isn’t
plain good and noone thinks they’ll make their investment back.

A Break-Dancing Game – Say What??

Then there are times when publishers just aren’t keeping awake.

This is the case for a recent PS2 game that we feel could be this years,
“Coolest Game” that you’re not playing (US)… and that is B-Boy the video game.

Designed by newcomer UK game developer Freestyle Games, and developed
along with SCEE (Sony Europe) it amazes me this game didn’t reach stateside.

B-boy is a video game that plays on rhythm-coordinated music games; which as
we all know, is the hottest new genre of gaming that since Parappa to DDR, to
games like BeatMix and Guitar Hero II has caught on with gamers.

A first game for FreeStyle Games, B-Boy breaks the barrier of gaming by making
a unique take on break-dancing, the same street-dance style that evolved with the
hip hop movement that we’ve all grown up with.

Flying Steps promoting the game

B-Boy Video Game Trailer

Whats sick is how fun this game sounds. Not only did the developers get actual
breakers from all over the world to sample for their battle footage and research,
the game even lets you play for an addias sponsorship!

Made for both PSP and PS2, this is one game I hope Sony Computer Entertainment
of America either gets a publisher (or themselves) to wake up and bring over this cool
game to the US soon or get FreeStyle to upgrade it and port it to PS3 with crisper
graphics, more songs, and moves.

Here’s hoping? Maybe we should start a petition – Who’s in?
