Ssshh!! Here’s a Top Secret Way To Join The Game Industry

Got your attention? Good, its time to focus!

Ok all you backseat game designers… who thinks they got what it takes to join the game industry? Probably the most #1 sought out job for a gamer (besides a game journalist) is becoming a game developer… and boy oh boy is it your lucky day!

Who thinks they’d be ready if a game producer came to your door and said, “Want to join our team?” Well if you’re up to the challenge, thats exactly what Acclaim & Dave Perry are doing.

Enter Acclaim’s Project TopSecret.

The infamous game developer David Perry (remember Earthworm Jim?) from Shiny Entertainment has joined Acclaim on a new game called 2Moons and is giving one lucky gamer THE dream internship by providing a sure fire way to be part of a game development team, complete with getting game credits, royalties for your efforts, etc. etc.

Think of it as sort of a American Idol meets Apprentice for gamers. (without those annoying reality camerman!)

That is, only if you are the chosen one.

If you got what it takes then sign up for Acclaim’s Top Secret. (And make sure to msg us a comment if you get in!)

What are you waiting for? Sign in is limited so don’t wait!!

EA Crowns Riccitello’s Return As New CEO

28 02 2007

On April 2nd, former EA executive John Riccitiello will return to EA to replace Larry Probst as CEO of Electronic Arts. Riccitiello’s previous role was as EA’s former president and chief operating officer before leaving in 2004 to manage a venture firm game Elevation Partners.

Probst, criticized for allowing EA’s profits to fall as the company relied heavily on hit franchises (such as Madden, Sims, SSX, NBA Live, etc.) left many wondering if the leading game publisher had any originality left. Will EA grow with the leadership of Riccitello?

“Leading EA has always been my dream job and I am truly honored that Larry and the board have given me this opportunity,” Riccitello continues by saying, “This is an extremely well-run company driven by outstanding studio and publishing teams. They’ve also made strategic investments in new platforms and markets that will help extend EA’s industry leadership in the years ahead.”

With its homebase in Redwood City, Ca. time will tell if EA can continue to hold onto its lead on the gaming industry and legacy.

Cupid’s Valentines Games For Couples

13 02 2007

Ah, Valentines… for Gamers this means either one of two things: you either love or hate this holiday, all depending on your disposition.

Majority of your liking to Valentines depends if you’re a single gamer or a ‘hitched’ gamer; if you’re part of the latter and are referred to as “part of a better half” (I’ll leave you to decide which one YOU are) than you’ll have to face the fact that there’s no escaping it; you have no choice BUT to embrace this holiday.

Yet while Valentines has become less & less about the celebration of love (and more of a corporate cash-in holiday) doesn’t mean you can’t make the best of it.

With all the obligatory gifts you’ll be buying i.e. flowers, chocolates, dinner, dessert? – why not change it up this year and give her the gift of gaming too?

Now don’t worry, until your gf becomes a true gamer she probably won’t want to take away your Gears of War or Halo 3 from you. But maybe she’ll be keen to your Guitar Hero II or WiiSports?

And what better way to celebrate a holiday about love by spending some ‘quality’ time. While girl Gamers are still a niche in the largely male-dominated gaming world, female Gamers numbers are rising; which is a good sign for the gaming industry and culture as a whole.

If you haven’t done so already this might be the perfect time for you two to finally play – together. Think about it. Valentines is the perfect occasion to get your significant other into games. By playing games together, you’ll develop a bond, all the while still getting some game time in.

In fact, a recent article that expresses this same concept can be found in the January/February Women’s Health magazine. In the article, a social psychologist from Los Angeles named Susan K. Perry, Ph.D. states that “Playing video games allows you to bond and learn how to problem-solve as a team.”

Just make sure if you do play games for valentines that you still do the obligatory flowers, cards, candies. Subsituting games for these basic valentines tokens to increase your funds unfortunately is NOT usually an acceptable option.

So what games would work well for couples you ask? Obviously the best games would depend on your lady’s individual taste (does she like puzzle games ? action games? racing?) and most likely it would help if it were a 2-player co-op or versus.

If your loved one can learn the ropes of the game you’ll end up having a better time too.

Some examples of couple friendly games:

SIMS BUSTING OUT by EA. (multiple platforms)

CUPID says: This game is great for couples as its addictive nature can cater to both men & woman alike; is easy to pick up and play, and can be saved for more fun.
Last year, while my wife was pregnant, I would have to call her mid-day to remind her to eat and take a break as she began to get absolutely hooked on a little game called “Sims: Busting Out”.

What started out as a way for me to get some game time with The Sims became a game where we both became hooked into getting our characters some cool upgrades.

For her, the addicting part came in getting enough money to buy the things she couldn’t buy (yet) in real life. From clothing to getting enough cash to spruce up her character’s pad by buying a new TV or couch, she simply couldn’t get enough of the game.

MARIO KART: DOUBLE DASH by Nintendo for GameCube
CUPID says: Another game great for couples, this game can easily get the ladies glued to their seats (and if you play your cards right they won’t even know you’ve LET them win!); fast and furious, but still cute and simple, the gameplay is great for couples on the go.

KARAOKE REVOLUTION by Konami (ps2)

CUPID says: Karaoke for Gamers? Valentines? Sounds like gaming couples bliss. Nuff said.

So go ahead, get out there and play together. Who knows, you might have found your perfect opponent – who happens to be just right next to you.

The Next Morning: Which Superbowl Ads Did You Like?

5 02 2007

Now everyone knows the superbowl ads usually cause more fanfare than the actual game itself.

As we all know, some of the best (and worse) commercials are aired during the Superbowl. Which one are your favorite(s)?

Below, I’ve comprised my Top Seven for ‘07 Superbowl Ads

1) Rock Paper Scissors! by Budweiser
2) We’re Obsessed with Quality by GM
3) Class Mencia by Budweiser
4) Dalmation- Spot Wink by Budweiser
4) Live the Flavor by Doritos
5) Fist Bump by Budweiser
6) Snickers Superbowl Ad – by Snickers
7) Coca-Cola Videogame by Coca-Cola
(If this premiered for the Superbowl it’d be higher
but this GTA recycled ad loses ranking for me because
its a bit old already)

What’s your favorite? Wait, you haven’t seen them all?
Well what are you waiting for go and check em out. I found them
on Youtube. Vote today and youtube we’ll tally the totals and
provide the list of the most top rated on Tues, Feb. 6!
